Karaoke Therapy
by Laura Baran
2026-2023
Similarly to playing musical instruments, when I get to sing and dance through my emotions, there are therapeutic messages in the sounds of release. Each drawing serves as a snapshot of expressive comfort.
The simplicity of the words on the screens are nostalgic for a pre-internet existence. Lines of text in analog, simple glowing light, represent cathartic breakthroughs. In the private space of a rented karaoke room, I connect with inspiration to rage, cry, and emote.
I get to experience a union of other artist’s art with my own inner world.
Some lyrics are prayers, some are statements, and all of it is political and spiritual.
These drawings of karaoke screens EXPLORE how Singing MY heart out, to lyrics on digital displays, feels Like It SOOTHES my WELLBEING.
